Jim and Lois VanDerwerken bought the dairy farm on Creek Road that became the Pumpkin Patch in 1955. The barn and house date back to 1852. They transitioned from a dairy farm to selling Holstein heifers and raising vegetable crops. In the 1980s they grew pumpkins for a local grocery store chain. In 1985 a surplus of pumpkins helped them decide to open their “pick your own” operation. The Pumpkin Patch began that first year with seven Storybook characters and a hayride into the field. Over the past 36 years, we have expanded our operation to include the snack bar, gift shop, cider donuts, and many more activities. Jim passed away in 2011. He was a moving force behind the Pumpkin Patch from its inception. We all miss him. You can view his obituary here.
Jim and Lois raised their eight children on the farm. Lois has 37 grandchildren and 55 great-grandchildren. These grandchildren and great-grandchildren love to come to the farm, both to visit and to work.
Our goal has always been to provide an affordable, fun experience for families in our idyllic, farm setting. We are thrilled to be serving second and third-generation customers. We appreciate your continued support of our business and hope you enjoy your visit to the farm!
